GN #380B/BN #9709 |
Description: |
Built in August 1952 as freight-geared F7B #460B, and regeared for passenger service in 1969 as #380B. After the BN merger, the #380B was renumbered with other passenger-geared units into the #97xx-series as #9709. Several years later, after Amtrak ceased leasing units and a number of E's were assigned to the Racetrack, the #9709 was renumbered #705 for freight service. The #705 was retired and sold to the Precision National Corporation in December 1980. Scanned with an Epson V550 from a Kodak-processed Ektachrome duplicate 35mm slide. |

Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #2347, #2312, #2337, #9787, and #9806-B. All were built by EMD. #2347, #2312, and #2337 are EF-25's built in 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #9787 and #9806-B are EF-15A's built by EMD in 1951 and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. They are pulling a 164-car mixed-cargo freight train past ALTO Tower (not visible on the right) on their way up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. The caboose is #477636. Bringing-up the rear are "pushers" #6305 and #6309. This photo taken from the steps of ALTO Tower. |

Former PC Prime Mover Car #73600 |
Description: |
Unusual car built from an old F7B unit whose purpose was to carry prime movers during rebuilds in the Penn Central era. Technically, this is now a Conrail item since the date is April, 1980. I cannot find it listed on a Conrail roster however. This is not to be confused with Conrail's Q1 prime mover test car, formerly CR 6097, nee-EL 3632, which wore the EL's bicentennial paint. |
